Shaving for prom

Our take

Hey there, prom queen! It sounds like you’re feeling a bit self-conscious about your underarms, especially with a fabulous dress that shows them off. Thick hair and post-shave darkness can be frustrating, but you’re definitely not alone in this! While long-term solutions like laser hair removal aren’t on your radar, there are some quick fixes and tips to help you feel confident and glamorous on your special night.

Prom night is a rite of passage that many young people look forward to with excitement, but for some, it can come with a side of anxiety. A recent Reddit post from a user named Better-Statement700 captures this perfectly, as she seeks advice on how to manage her underarm hair situation before the big night. With a dress that showcases her armpits, she feels overwhelmed by the visibility of her thick hair, leading to darkened skin that makes her feel less than confident. This dilemma resonates with many, as it highlights the pressures of conforming to beauty standards, especially in a high-stakes environment like prom. It’s an issue that invites a broader discussion about body image, self-acceptance, and the societal expectations that often leave us feeling like we’re not good enough, even when we are.

The beauty industry has long perpetuated the idea that flawless skin is synonymous with confidence, pushing products and procedures on us that promise to deliver the unattainable. In a world filled with filters and edited photos, it’s easy to forget that most people experience their own struggles, whether it’s skin texture, hair thickness, or anything else. This is where the relatability factor comes into play. The sentiment expressed by Better-Statement700—feeling like a “hairy monster”—is something many can relate to, even if they don’t openly discuss it. For instance, in our article titled "Terrible skin, I need some quick help", we see another individual grappling with last-minute beauty concerns before a big event. This shared experience fosters a sense of community and reminds us that we’re not alone in our beauty-related battles.

While Better-Statement700 is looking for quick fixes—steering clear of long-term solutions like laser hair removal—her inquiry opens the door to a conversation about temporary solutions that empower rather than shame. The quest for instant beauty fixes often leads us down a rabbit hole of products that promise miracles but ultimately fall short. It's essential to approach solutions with a critical eye, asking ourselves if they truly enhance our self-esteem or merely mask our perceived flaws. This notion is echoed in our article "Tape for my big old jugs", where the pursuit of perfection can sometimes overshadow the importance of feeling comfortable in our skin.

As prom approaches, it's crucial to remember that the goal is not to achieve an unrealistic standard but to feel confident in your own unique beauty. Whether it’s experimenting with different hair removal methods, finding the right outfit that makes you feel fabulous, or simply owning your look with unapologetic confidence, there’s power in embracing who you are. The conversation surrounding beauty standards is evolving, and it’s important that we support each other in feeling empowered rather than pressured.

Looking ahead, one can’t help but wonder: How will future generations navigate the complexities of beauty and self-acceptance in a world that continues to evolve? Will we see a shift towards embracing natural beauty, or will the pressure of external expectations continue to reign? The answers may lie in how we choose to support one another in our journeys toward self-love, reminding ourselves that glamour is not just about perfection, but rather confidence and personality shining through.

Hi! My prom is coming up and I'm wearing a dress that shows my armpits..

I have really thick hair that, even after shaving or using hair remover cream, is still visible under the skin. This leads to darker skin on my underarms and generally just looking like I didn't shave!! It's so bad to the point where my mom literally vetoes tank-tops without a cardigan when we go out.

I feel like a hairy monster 99% of the time and I really don't want to feel like that on my prom night. Any help would be appreciated, except for solutions like laser hair removal or anything long-term like that!!

Thank you!!!!
